A Texas man has reportedly confessed to fatally shooting his wife because he felt she dismissed his complaints of back pain, police say. The tragic incident unfolded while their three children were in the house.

Jose Romero, aged 43, faces murder charges following the deadly shooting on May 2. Authorities report that during an argument, Romero shot his 39-year-old wife, Yanira Marin de Romero, several times while she was in the bathroom of their Harris County residence, according to a police press release.

The couple resided in Cloverleaf, a neighborhood within the Houston metropolitan area. In the wake of Marin de Romero’s death, family members took to Facebook, describing their relationship as seemingly “perfect.”

“Our family is devastated and struggling to accept this reality,” one family member shared in a post on May 4. “Their marriage was one I considered nearly perfect. They had been together since adolescence and were a source of pride for our family,” the relative continued.

As reported by CBS affiliate KHOU, the couple’s children, aged 3, 8, and 13, were present in the home during the incident, which occurred around 1 p.m. on that Saturday. Thankfully, the children were not physically harmed. Marin de Romero was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds and was declared dead at the scene.

Romero allegedly called 911 himself and advised that “he just shot his wife,” according to the police press release. “Upon arrival, deputies located [Romero] and detained him without incident,” the release says. “Romero told homicide detectives he shot and killed Yanira Marin de Romero because she didn’t take his back pain seriously.”

Relatives have said on Facebook that what the family is “going through” has been “very hard.” The couple’s children “will no longer have their parents together,” the loved one from earlier said.

“[Marin de Romero] left this world perhaps without even knowing what happened in that moment,” the relative posted.

Romero remained locked up in the Harris County Jail over the weekend.
