As the Gulf Coast readies itself for the challenges of the 2026 hurricane season, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is gearing up for action. Their dedicated pilots and crews are poised to take flight at the first sign of a storm.
Nick Underwood, a seasoned hurricane hunter with NOAA, sheds light on the meticulous preparations that start long before any storm clouds gather. “We conduct training flights, calibrate our instruments, and install the scientific equipment we’ll rely on throughout the season,” Underwood explained. “Our focus is on ensuring the aircraft are fully operational and our teams are well-prepared for when a storm emerges.”
