West Virginia State Police reported on Monday the discovery of remains believed to be those of a mother and daughter who had been missing for nearly 24 years.

According to police, two sets of remains, believed to belong to Susan and Natasha “Alex” Carter, were found in the 100 block of Kyle Lane in Beckley around 4:30 p.m. Monday. The home belonged to Larry Webb, a man convicted of Alex’s murder who passed away hours before the remains were found and days after his deathbed confession.

Webb, who was behind bars at the Mount Olive Correctional Complex, “suffered a medical episode and was pronounced dead at Montgomery General Hospital,” on Monday at around 10:30 a.m.

Natasha and her mother, Susan, were last seen in the Beckley region on or around August 8, 2000, as CrimeOnline previously reported. Their disappearance coincided with a custody dispute between Susan and Natasha’s father, Rick Lafferty.

Shortly before her disappearance, Natasha moved in with her mother and her mother’s new boyfriend, police said. Susan Carter’s boyfriend was identified as Webb.

Investigators previously searched Webb’s home in 2022. During one of the searches, according to CBS News, Webb claimed he had dementia and couldn’t remember what happened to Natasha or her mother.

“I don’t have any idea what happened to her…I don’t remember,” Webb said. “I have dementia. I can’t say exactly.”

Earlier this month, however, Webb gave investigators details on how and why he killed both victims and where the remains were located, following his arrest for Alex’s death.

During an argument over money, Webb shot and killed Susan Carter, then, thinking he “had ruined his life forever,” killed Alex, News Channel 3 reports.

Webb then wrapped their bodies in bed linens and buried them in a shallow grave in his backyard. Investigators spent three days digging before finding the remains Monday.

“It was later that same afternoon (Monday, April 22) when we found Susan and Alex Carter. A bit of a poetic ending that not even I could write,” police said.
