GAINESVILLE, Fla. – In a disturbing incident near the University of Florida campus, 38-year-old Daniel Phillip Myrick was taken into custody early today following allegations of a violent assault that left another man severely injured.

Authorities from the Gainesville Police Department responded to an emergency call around 1:15 a.m. on May 3, in the vicinity of the 1700 block of West University Avenue. Upon arrival, officers discovered the victim, who was suffering from a deep cut on his eyebrow, a swollen eye, and a severe laceration to his ear, with part of it nearly severed.

According to several witnesses, Myrick was identified as the individual responsible for repeatedly striking the victim. The victim himself reportedly confirmed that Myrick was the assailant.

In a spontaneous statement, Myrick allegedly admitted to having knocked someone out during the altercation.

Post Miranda, Myrick reportedly said he did not want to tell the officer what had happened.

Myrick, whose address is listed as the former St. Francis House, has been charged with felony battery. He has nine felony convictions (two violent), 22 misdemeanor convictions (one violent), and three criminal traffic convictions; he has served two state prison sentences, with his most recent release in 2020. Judge Adam Lee set bail at $75,000.
