Eric Wayne Davidson, a 57-year-old resident, found himself in custody following accusations of shoplifting over $700 worth of goods from a JC Penney store in Gainesville, Florida. The incidents, which were reported to have occurred on separate occasions, have drawn significant attention from local law enforcement.

An investigation by the Gainesville Police Department revealed that Davidson first visited the JC Penney store on April 19. During this visit, he allegedly slipped two pairs of Nike shoes, valued at $195, into a backpack and exited the premises without proceeding through the checkout.

The situation escalated when Davidson reportedly returned to the store on May 9. On this occasion, he is accused of placing three pairs of shoes along with multiple clothing items into a tote bag. This collection of merchandise was estimated to be worth $530. Surveillance footage purportedly captured Davidson leaving without paying, leading to an intervention by the store’s loss prevention team. They managed to recover the items and detain him shortly after.

Following his arrest, Davidson was read his Miranda rights but chose to remain silent, declining to comment on either incident. The case continues to unfold as authorities proceed with their investigation into these events.

Post Miranda, Davidson did not want to make any statements about either incident.

Davidson has been charged with two counts of petit theft with two or more prior convictions (a felony). He has nine felony convictions (one violent), seven misdemeanor convictions (one violent), and four criminal traffic convictions. He has served two state prison sentences out of Broward County, with his most recent release in 2003. He was arrested in Alachua County in 2025 for stealing over $900 in merchandise from Lowe’s and was sentenced to three months in jail after entering a plea of nolo contendere to the charge. Judge Susan Miller-Jones set bail at $20,000 on the new charges.
