A California woman accused of decapitating her boyfriend and fleeing to Mexico has been extradited back to the United States to face murder charges.

Alyssa Marie Lira, 23, is facing charges of felony murder and an additional charge for the personal use of a weapon, as detailed in a press release from the Orange County District Attorney’s Office. The charges stem from the alleged killing of her boyfriend, Enrique Gonzalez-Carbajal, 55, after only two months of dating.

According to the release, Lira is suspected of using a knife to kill Gonzalez-Carbajal, whose headless body was discovered in her home on August 25, 2025. After the incident, Lira reportedly fled California and made her way to Mexico.

Following a collaborative five-month investigation between U.S. and Mexican authorities, Lira was apprehended in Mexico on January 22 and subsequently taken into custody at the San Ysidro border crossing the next day. She has since been booked into the Anaheim Police Department Detention Facility.

“Nothing—be it time, distance, or international borders—will deter our quest for justice,” stated Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer in the press release. “Orange County law enforcement remains committed to pursuing criminals to the ends of the earth to ensure accountability for their heinous acts.”

Spitzer added that multiple agencies worked together on the investigation to “identify a cold-blooded killer, track her down in a foreign country, and bring her back to the United States to face the full weight of the law.”

Lira’s arraignment date is scheduled for Feb. 13 at the North Justice Center in Fullerton. She is now being held, without bail, at the Orange County Jail.

An attorney has not yet been assigned to Lira, a spokesperson from the Orange County Public Defender’s Office tells Oxygen, and it’s unclear how she plans to plead. If Lira is convicted of the charges, she faces a maximum prison sentence of 26 years to life.
