A Minnesota man stands accused of savagely attacking his coworker with a sledgehammer, allegedly because he disliked her.
David Bruce Delong, age 40, has been charged with second-degree murder. The incident occurred at Advanced Process Technologies, a food and dairy processing facility located in Cokato, Minnesota. The attack took place around 6 a.m. on November 11, as detailed in a criminal complaint obtained by Oxygen.
The victim, identified by her family and reported by KARE 11, was 20-year-old welder Amber Czech.
The complaint describes surveillance footage that allegedly shows Delong leaving his station, grabbing a sledgehammer, and striking Czech, who was out of the camera’s direct view. Following the first blow, Delong reportedly delivered four additional strikes in a downward motion, according to the complaint.
After the attack, Delong allegedly approached a male coworker and stated, “I hit her with your hammer, she is by your toolbox. She is gone,” as noted in the documents.
Wright County Sheriff’s deputies arrived at the processing facility at 6 a.m. to find Czech laying on the cement floor with “major head trauma” and “significant blood loss.”
Emergency personnel rendered medical care to Czech, but she died of blunt force trauma to the head and blood loss, authorities said.
The bloody sledgehammer was found nearby on the ground.
Delong later confessed to law enforcement authorities to killing her, admitting that he had been planning the attack “for some time,” according to the court records.
Authorities said he also “admitted not liking the victim.”
Father Describes Amber Czech as Hard Worker
Czech’s father told KARE 11 that his daughter was an outgoing, hard worker, who loved her job.
Following her death, Advanced Process Technologies offered its condolences.
“As some in our community know, one of our facilities was the site of a tragic event that resulted in the death of one of our coworkers,” read a message on Facebook. “Our hearts are with their family, friends and all who are grieving this loss. We are working closely with law enforcement as they investigate this event and focused on supporting our employees and the victim’s family.”
Wright County Attorney Brian Lutes noted in a statement that he is contemplating taking the case to a grand jury in an effort to upgrade the charges against Delong to first degree premeditated murder.
