Subaru Hit-and-Run: Cyclist Struck and Left by Reckless Driver, Say Police

A tragic incident unfolded in Delaware when a woman drove her Subaru into a cyclist, resulting in his death, according to local authorities. The driver only stopped when her vehicle eventually broke down.

Kara Gilmore, aged 46, is facing multiple charges, including second-degree vehicular homicide, in connection to the death of 52-year-old Duane Pershing, as reported by the Delaware State Police. Additional charges against her include fleeing the scene of a fatal accident, driving under the influence of alcohol, and various traffic violations.

The accident occurred on Tuesday around 9 p.m. as Pershing was cycling westbound in the eastbound bike lane on Atlantic Avenue in Millville, Delaware. Simultaneously, Gilmore was driving her Subaru Forester eastward on the same road, placing them on a direct collision course.

The collision took place on Atlantic Avenue, just east of Whites Neck Road in Millville, a small town situated four miles from the Atlantic Coast. Authorities state that Gilmore veered out of her lane, entered the bike lane, and struck the cyclist.

Despite the impact, Gilmore allegedly continued driving until her SUV broke down in a nearby bank’s parking lot, where officers from the Ocean View Police Department discovered her. Upon contact, troopers noted that Gilmore exhibited several signs of impairment.

Law enforcement gave her field sobriety tests and then arrested her for DUI.

Pershing was found at the crash site and was flown to a regional hospital “with life-threatening injuries,” troopers said. He died the following day.

After Gilmore’s arrest, she was released on a $3,404 unsecured bond. However, following Pershing’s death, several of her charges were upgraded, and she was taken into custody in Maryland, where she is from.

The Delaware State Police said on Thursday that the crash investigation was ongoing, and they urged anyone with information to contact them.
