A tragic incident unfolded when a man allegedly attacked and killed his coworker in an act of violence reportedly sparked by feelings of being overly controlled at work.
Ramy Fahim has confessed to the murder of his colleague Griffin Cuomo, along with Cuomo’s roommate, Jonathan Bahm. This confession was confirmed by a press release from the Orange County District Attorney’s Office in California, dated May 6.
Initially, Fahim, aged 30, pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. However, subsequent evaluations found him to be mentally competent. He now faces the prospect of two life sentences without the possibility of parole, as stated by a spokesperson for the District Attorney’s Office.
Fahim served as a research associate, while Cuomo worked in marketing at Pence Wealth Management located in Newport Beach. This information comes from a prosecution trial brief reviewed by Oxygen.
According to the brief, Fahim and Cuomo once maintained a friendly rapport, often exchanging messages outside of professional settings. Unfortunately, their relationship began to sour in early 2022, leading to the tragic events.
Fahim was allegedly frustrated with Cuomo, whom he felt “micromanaged” him and interrupted his lunch breaks. Coworkers told investigators that Fahim sometimes yelled at Cuomo, which contributed to a tense atmosphere at work.
About a month before the murders, Cuomo told coworkers he was carrying a knife for protection because he feared Fahim.
Investigators said Fahim planned the attack by scouting Cuomo’s Anaheim apartment complex before sneaking onto the rooftop deck on April 18, 2022, shortly after midnight.
Fahim lingered at the building for approximately six hours before making his way to the sixth floor, armed with a black trash bag full of cleaning supplies, according to the brief.
He then “patiently” waited for Cuomo outside his unit and when Cuomo opened the door to leave for work, he ambushed him “without warning,” stabbing him in the throat, according to the brief.
Prosecutors said Fahim then pushed Cuomo back inside the apartment, where he stabbed him 50 more times.
When Bahm witnessed the attack, he ran into the bathroom, locked the door and called 911, according to the brief, but Fahim forced his way inside. Although Bahm was able to run for the front door, Fahim caught up with him near the kitchen and stabbed him more than 30 times.
When Anaheim police arrived, they ordered Fahim outside and he complied by crawling into the hallway, per the brief, while bleeding from a thigh wound.
Police recovered a bloody knife from Fahim’s sweatshirt pocket, while a search of his vehicle uncovered two shovels, tarps, rope and another knife in his car.
Fahim admitted to killing Cuomo and Bahm, but blamed his actions on a schizophrenia diagnosis, according to the brief. Fahim said he had heard voices for months, instructing him to carry out both good and bad deeds, including murder.
Fahim said he had planned to cut off Cuomo’s head, bury it “in nature” and throw his body in the trash, per the brief.
Killing Bahm, Fahim told investigators, was an act of “panic” and “necessity” and because of the voices.
“These young men were just starting to live out their dreams and find their places in the world. But an intruder who stalked them and then slashed them to death in their own home interrupted those dreams,” Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer said in a 2022 press release. “The callous way that two young lives were ended cannot be ignored and we will do everything we can to ensure justice is served.”
Fahim will be sentenced on May 13, a spokesperson from the District Attorney’s Office told Oxygen.
