A father from Maryland faces charges of murder and child abuse following the tragic death of his 4-month-old son over the weekend.
Authorities report that Khalil Brooks-Clarke dialed 911 shortly before 1 a.m., admitting to harming the infant. When officers arrived, they discovered the baby, Kairo Brooks, unresponsive. According to a statement from the Prince George’s County Police Department, the infant was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The autopsy revealed that the child succumbed to blunt force trauma.
Court documents indicate that Brooks-Clarke was the primary caregiver for the infant, as the child’s mother has been incarcerated for the past three weeks, according to WJLA.
“Detectives interviewed the baby’s mother,” the documents reveal. “She explained that the defendant often became irritated when the baby cried or was fussy. In his frustration, he would record videos of himself shaking the baby when the crying did not cease.”
“Tragically, in many cases like this, there is never an opportunity for intervention by police or other services before it is too late,” said police chief George Nader. “Infants and children, like Kairo, are among the most vulnerable members of our community and rely entirely on others for their safety and care.”
Following consultations with the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office, Brooks-Clarke was charged and is currently held by the Department of Corrections pending a bond review hearing.
Brooks-Clark has been charged with first- and second-degree murder, first- and second-degree child abuse, and additional related charges.
