Data from the popular Japanese streaming services ABEMA Video and Niconico Douga reveals the most popular Spring 2024 anime based on view count, with some likely surprises for U.S. fans.
X (formerly Twitter) user Ranking Stalker revealed the most popular anime from ABEMA and Niconico over the last 24 hours and since the Spring 2024 season began. While highly anticipated Spring 2024 anime like That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime (Tensura) ranked well, it was another reincarnation anime that took the top spot, with Tsumugi Akita’s I Was Reincarnated as the 7th Prince so I Can Take My Time Perfecting My Magical Ability at #1 with 1.32 million views. Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation ranked #2 with 1.30 million views, and An Archdemon’s Dilemma: How to Love Your Elf Bride came third with 1.24 million. Japan’s Anime Streaming Numbers Show That ‘Most Anticipated’ Doesn’t Always Mean ‘Most Popular’
The viewing figures are a stark reminder of how the leading anticipated titles don’t always align with viewing figures. ABEMA, which saw more views on its anime, released the list of its top 5 most anticipated Spring 2024 anime last month. However, only Tensura managed to live up to the hype, with Demon Slayer set to be released later in the season. The figures also demonstrate platform dependence, with anime featuring more moe-type characters, like Blue Archive, Yuru Camp and The Idolmaster Shiny Colors, faring much better on Niconico.
Ironically, international viewing habits line up closer to ABEMA’s figures. Currently airing anime data from MyAnimeList — the world’s biggest anime tracker with an over 95% non-Japanese user base — sees KonoSuba, Tensura, Mushoku Tensei and Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf all currently making the top 5. This also reveals Crunchyroll’s dominance in the overseas streaming market, with these four all part of the streaming service’s Spring 2024 anime lineup.
