Madison Square Garden congratulates Travis and Taylor on their wedding

Prominent Individuals

The wedding of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce caught everyone off guard with its unexpected twists. While many believed their nuptials would feature a romantic, classic ceremony in Rhode Island, the duo veered off the anticipated path, choosing instead a dazzling event at Madison Square Garden in New York City, attended by 1,000 of their closest friends and family members. The surprises weren’t short-lived, especially with their choice of officiant…

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s nuptials left many astounded as they defied expectations. Most anticipated a traditional, intimate ceremony in Rhode Island following their engagement, but the couple instead orchestrated a grand affair at New York’s iconic Madison Square Garden, with a guest list numbering 1,000. The surprises continued, notably with their officiant choice—comedian Adam Sandler, stepping into the role for the first time. Interestingly, the entertainment world has seen several celebrities take a turn at officiating weddings, for friends, family, and fans alike.

Adam Sandler married Travis and Taylor

Though Adam Sandler has charmed audiences for years with his memorable, quirky characters, he hadn’t ventured into wedding officiating until now. His close friendship with both Taylor and Travis led him to this unexpected role at their wedding.

While some fans assumed Sandler didn’t know Travis and Taylor until the Eras tour, that doesn’t seem to be the case. He’s praised Swift multiple times, insisting she means a lot to his family. Sandler and Kelce developed their own separate relationship on the set of Happy Gilmore 2, and he was happy to step in to take on the big job. Sandler is actually the perfect person for the role when you think about it; several of his films involve romance and weddings, and he has one of the most enduring love stories in all of Hollywood.

Sandler’s job as the wedding officiant kept the nontraditional theme in place. A statement from Swift’s representative also revealed that the couple skipped a traditional bridal party altogether. “Taylor & Travis did not have bridesmaids or groomsmen,” the statement read. “Instead, her brother Austin Swift served as Taylor’s Man of Honor and Jason Kelce was Travis’ Best Man.”

Adam Sandler isn’t the first celebrity to serve as an officiant

Adam Sandler’s turn behind the altar at Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding may have been a first for him personally, but he’s far from the first celebrity to take on the honor. Over the years, plenty of A-listers have stepped into the role for friends, co-stars, and even total strangers.

Jonah Hill officiated the 2014 wedding of Adam Levine to Behati Prinsloo. Hill insisted it was his honor. Ian McKellen presided over his X-Men co-star Patrick Stewart’s 2013 ceremony to Sunny Ozell, and Benedict Cumberbatch did the honors for close friend Rob Rinder in 2013.

Stevie Nicks officiated Vanessa Carlton’s wedding to musician John McCauley, also in 2013. More recently, Carson Daly married his Voice co-stars, Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani. That ceremony went down in 2021. Harry Styles even officiated his agent Jeffrey Azoff’s wedding, as well.

Several stars have served as officiants for fans, too. The Rock served as the officiant for a comedian and fan, as a surprise.
