Chelsea’s Downfall: Analyzing the Crucial Stats Leading to Liam Rosenior’s Dismissal

The decision by Chelsea to part ways with head coach Liam Rosenior was driven by a noticeable and ongoing decline in the team’s performance metrics, highlighting the extent of the challenges faced during his leadership.

One of the most concerning trends for the club has been its offensive struggles. Chelsea has suffered five consecutive Premier League defeats without finding the back of the net—marking their worst goal drought since November 1912.

This losing streak also marks their longest in the league since November 1993, underscoring the gravity of the situation.

Attack breakdown and historic struggles

The team’s struggles in front of goal have been particularly evident. Chelsea has secured just one victory in their last nine league outings, amassing a mere five points during that stretch. This tally is only marginally better than Tottenham Hotspur, who have managed to collect just two points in the same timeframe.

Further illustrating their struggles, performance data from their recent loss to Brighton & Hove Albion revealed Chelsea’s first-half expected goals (xG) figure was just 0.04. This was the lowest xG recorded across 114 halves of top-flight football previously managed by former boss Enzo Maresca.

Additionally, they failed to register a shot until the 41st minute, marking their slowest attacking start in a league game this season.

Defensive vulnerabilities persist

While the attack has stalled, defensive frailties have compounded the problem. Chelsea are now without a clean sheet in their last 12 Premier League matches, one of the longest such runs in their history.

Set-piece defending has also emerged as a critical weakness. The Blues have conceded 11 goals from corners this season, the joint-highest in a single Premier League campaign for the club, matching their 1994-95 record. Only West Ham United have conceded more (15).

Strategic fallout

These metrics collectively show systemic issues across both phases of play, eroding internal confidence in Rosenior’s leadership.

Despite initial backing from the club hierarchy, the data-driven reality left little room for continuity.

Chelsea have since appointed Calum McFarlane as interim head coach, tasking him with stabilising performances while the club undertakes a review to identify a long-term managerial solution.
