With an increasing spotlight on the fictional Dutton Ranch from the acclaimed Yellowstone series, many fans are left wondering if this iconic setting in Taylor Sheridan’s TV saga exists in reality.
When Yellowstone debuted in 2018, audiences were introduced to the Dutton family, owners of the largest ranch in Montana. As the show’s universe widened, with more series centered around this locale, viewers might be surprised to learn that the ranch is indeed grounded in reality — it’s known as Chief Joseph Ranch.
Rancher Shane Libel and his family, who run Chief Joseph Ranch, have recounted the moment Yellowstone creators chose their location. It was a visit that would turn their home into a piece of television history.
Libel shared a vivid memory from the location scout in an interview with TV Insider in 2022. “Taylor looked around and said, ‘That’s the bunkhouse right there,’” he recalled. Taylor Sheridan, the creative force behind the show, began envisioning scenes across the property. “‘Episode 1, Act 3 here!’ he’d call out, as his assistant scribbled down the details. The location director turned to me and said, ‘I think you have it.’”
Since its premiere, the gripping saga surrounding the Dutton family has spawned six spinoffs, showing no signs of slowing. However, as the Paramount Network continually expands this universe, the rapid growth has come with its fair share of production delays. The central narrative explores the complexities of family dynamics and power struggles in maintaining the largest contiguous ranch in the United States, adding layers to the family’s remarkable journey.
In addition to Chief Joseph Ranch, Yellowstone and 1923 filmed in Utah and the real-life Crow Indian Reservation. The Yellowstone franchise, meanwhile, has expanded to include 1883, The Madison, Y: Marshals, The Dutton Ranch, 1944 and 6666.

Where Is Dutton Ranch Located?
Yellowstone and 1923 were filmed at Chief Joseph Ranch, which is a working cattle ranch in Montana. Libel and his loved ones currently reside on the property that is five hours away from Yellowstone National Park.
Does ‘Yellowstone’ Film on the Real Ranch?
“This is the real deal. This is what makes this show sing, is that this lodge has actually become a character in our show,” Yellowstone set decorator Carla Curry said in a 2021 video while filming the show. “This is not a set. This is not on stage. This is a private home that we are lucky enough to be in.”
She continued: “It is historically an unbelievably irreplaceable home. So we’re proud of it, we want to keep the integrity of it, and we wanna honor our additional cast member here.”

Who Owns Chief Joseph Ranch?
Libel has owned the Chief Joseph Ranch since 2012, telling TV Insider, “We fell in love with it [and] the history, the buildings — just the ranch itself.”
The rancher was on set while Yellowstone was in production. (The main lodge featured on the show used to be a bed and breakfast but has since become Libel’s home.)
“The most surreal thing in the world — and the most humbling thing in the world is when you’re sitting in your own living room watching a show that’s filmed in your house,” Libel said in a 2021 Yellowstone promotional video.
Who Can Visit the Ranch?
During most of 2025, fans could travel to Chief Joseph Ranch before it closed to guests for the winter months. Visitors could stay at guest cabins, which would allow them to tour the location.
The Chief Joseph Ranch offered a Lee Dutton Cabin, the Rip Cabin and the Fisherman’s Cabin — with a nightly rate of over $1,000 for each. Chief Joseph Ranch’s website noted that the Lee Cabin was built in 1916 and overlooks the Bitterroot River.
