On August 25, the world bid farewell to the legendary Dolly Parton as her family confirmed her passing at the age of 80. In recent months, Parton contended with health challenges that necessitated her retreat from the public sphere. Despite these challenges, she expressed enduring aspirations, emphasizing that her goals extended far into the future.
Dolly Parton’s family announced her death
The news was delivered through a poignant video on Instagram by Parton’s nephew, Bryan Seaver, marking a solemn moment for fans and family alike.
“I’m Bryan Seaver, son of Cassie Parton, representing the Parton and Owens family today in announcing the passing of my aunt, Dolly Rebecca Parton Dean,” Seaver stated in the video. He described the beloved artist as “Sister, Sis, and Granny to one generation and Gigi to the next.” Seaver, who served as Parton’s head of security, a position previously held by his father, Larry, shared that Dolly requested this announcement be made years ago, a task he had only now come to fully realize.
Seaver highlighted that Parton’s immense success had not only unlocked opportunities for her family but also inspired countless artists. The Parton family remains committed to preserving her storied legacy, ensuring that her influence continues to resonate through the world of music and beyond.
“Our family and the team she has entrusted with her legacy will work diligently to ensure her spirit will live with us forever,” he said. “Dolly was a farmer, just like her daddy; he farmed the soil, she farmed songs and happiness.”
The singer spoke about what she wanted to achieve in the future
On Friday, Aug. 21, Parton shared an update on her health.
“As I’ve shared in video messages throughout the past year, I am dealing with some health issues that I just didn’t pay attention to when I was watching over Carl,” she told People. “You know, this isn’t the first time I’ve had to manage something like this. Back in the early ’80s, I was down for several months with female issues, and I was struggling with my weight at the time too, so it’s not like I haven’t been through hard times with my health.”

Still, she said that she was still working. She was preparing to open a Life of Many Colors Museum and a SongTeller Hotel in Nashville.
“Seriously, though, even though I’m still healin’, I’m still workin’!” she said. “You know me — as I’ve often said — I’ve dreamed myself into a corner and I still have so many things I want to achieve, so I’m gonna keep on working as long as I can to see everything come to life.”
In the past, Parton has said that she never wanted to retire.
Dolly Parton once shared how she wanted her legacy to continue after death
In 2020, Parton told the Dolly Parton’s America podcast that she has many songs she hoped to reveal after her death.
“I am a lucky person because I’ve got hundreds, hundreds, even thousands of songs and a big part of them haven’t even been recorded,” she said. “There’s enough stuff to go on forever with my music: to do compilation albums, to do, actually, new and original stuff, and I am purposely trying to put songs down for that very purpose. To have a click track and my vocals, to where any arrangement can be done. So I think ahead.”
She wanted her music to live on long after her death.
“For me, as far as what I hope my music will be left behind, I hope that it will always live,” she said. “I would like to think that I’ve left some good pieces of music. And I think as long as time lasts, people will be doing music all kinds of different ways.”
