Well, everybody’s a critic! The anticipated finale of American Horror Story: Delicate has enraged fans due to its short runtime and rushed ending.
The 12th installment of Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk‘s hit anthology series premiered on Sept. 20, 2023 and aired for five episodes before going on hiatus due to delays related to the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
The season, which follows rising actress Anna Victoria Alcott (Emma Roberts) as she navigates her tumultuous pregnancy and being stalked by a mysterious cult, returned in April 2024 to release the final four episodes.
The finale, which aired on Apr. 24, left viewers with a sour taste in their mouths because of its lack of answers.
The episode, called “The Auteur,” ended with roughly 10 minutes left in the hour.
FX also aired a commercial between the final scene and the credits, which duped viewers into thinking there was more to come.
One angry viewer wrote, “None of this makes sense. They’ve really outdone themselves this time, truly the worst finale and worst season in the history of AHS.”
Another tweeted, “So after ALL OF THAT BULLSHIT, she says one little sentence and everything is normal? She gets a normal baby and her Oscar?”
In the episode, Anna is kidnapped by the cult — led by Kim Kardashian’s Siobhan Corbyn — as she is giving birth. The new mother is told that she must join the cult in order to hold her child. Reluctantly, she agrees to do so and is joined by her husband’s late ex-wife, who was a former member of the cult, and they sing a chant together which defeats the leader of the cult.
In the final moments, Anna puts on the headdress worn by other cult members.
“Ryan Murphy better count his days for this finale wtf did I watch,” shared another viewer after watching the final episode of the season.
A fourth viewer had mixed feelings about the season and felt that it started strong, but didn’t follow though. “American Horror Story is not good anymore. They had a decent storyline for the first time in I don’t know how many seasons only to end it in the most disappointing way possible,” they wrote.
American Horror Story: Delicate clearly had a lot going for itself, given the passionate reaction from viewers following the finale. But in the end, the season promised too much and delivered too little. With uneven pacing and a lackluster finale, it seems that Season 12 is joining the lower-ranked seasons of the popular anthology series. We can’t all be Asylum!
