Tunde Onakoya, renowned Nigerian chess champion and the visionary behind Chess in Slums Africa, recently opened up about a poignant and transformative event from his early life.

In a moving personal account, Onakoya disclosed that as a baby, he encountered a grave medical issue after receiving an incorrect injection from a local healthcare worker.

“At just 9 months old, I fell seriously ill, and with hospitals being a luxury at the time, my mother turned to a local nurse for help 💔,” Onakoya recounted.

He explained that this medical mishap led to a debilitating condition that impaired his ability to communicate normally.

“The wrong injection resulted in vascular necrosis, leaving me to express myself only through chess ♟️😭,” he shared.

Onakoya’s story has since inspired many, highlighting not only the challenges he faced growing up but also how he found expression and purpose through chess.

Today, he is widely recognised for using the game as a tool to empower underprivileged children, helping them build confidence and life skills through his initiative.
