Karl Stefanovic reveals he developed bromance with Tony Armstrong over FaceTime calls where they would ‘take their shirts off’

Today show host Karl Stefanovic and ABC television star Tony Armstrong are the best of mates. 

And Karl tells Stellar Magazine that the pair developed their bromance during a period when they were lonely during lockdown. 

‘We were both in similar situations where we’re at our homes alone, and so on Friday nights we’d FaceTime and have a few beers and take our shirts off,’ the 49-year-old told the publication.

‘We got to know each other in that weird prism of that weird time’. 

Karl was the one who made the ‘first move’, contacting former AFL player Tony, 33, when he joined ABC’s News Breakfast as a sports reporter in 2020 to congratulate him on the new gig.

‘We have an understanding that if one of us rings the other and says: “Do you want to do something?” we don’t need to know the full context of the idea because the other one is duty bound to say yes,’ Karl said. 

The pair posed together for a photoshoot in the latest edition of Stellar Magazine, where they recreate a famous image of John Lennon and wife Yoko Ono during their ‘bed-in’ in 1969 which Karl joked was their, ‘first public outing’. 

Tony is fresh off his Logies success last month.

He took home the Bert Newton Award for Most Popular Presenter for A Dog’s World on ABC. 

In April Armstrong told Stellar magazine that being labelled an Indigenous TV star was a double-edged sword.

‘All of us in the performing arts who are on TV, who are behind the mic, who are represented in print media will continue to be frustrated by it,’ he said.

‘I know that most of us would love to be able to strike ‘Indigenous’ before our name when we’re talked about.

‘What a treat that would be to just be able to be “Tony Armstrong, dancer.” “Tony Armstrong, guitarist, musician…” whatever it might be.’

He said the ‘other side of the coin’ was that Indigenous stars have the responsibility to ‘keep stepping up’. 

‘I guess to be a blackfella is to be political, whether you like it or not,’ he said.

Tony is fresh off his Logies success last month. He took home the Bert Newton Award for Most Popular Presenter for A Dog’s World on ABC
