Kim Buike seems to have found love with Faith Martin on Bachelor in Paradise, despite Kathy Swarts’ misgivings. Nancy Hulkower, who spent a brief time chatting up the retired Navy captain, described him as perfectly nice during a recent podcast appearance, and Joan Vassos liked him enough to keep him in her roster of potential soulmates until week 3. Leslie Fhima seemed to think he was nice enough to keep him as a friend, but not as a love interest. Kathy Swarts had a much different take on him. The septagenarian was downright hostile towards him during their brief interactions on Bachelor in Paradise, and her pursed lips and commentary about who would be “right for him” did nothing to suggest she found anything charming about the silver fox. In a recent podcast interview, she revealed what her issue with Kim was, though not all viewers are buying her story.

When Bachelor in Paradise premiered several weeks ago, Kathy Swarts wasn’t the golden contestant we pegged to be the last one standing. We assumed Nancy Hulkower and Leslie Fhima would spend a bit more time at the beach. Because we saw Kathy for longer than initially anticipated, we saw more of her than the other Goldens. While the younger contestants and many of the Golden contestants seemed to get along with her fine, she was particularly hostile towards one contestant.

Kathy was downright nasty to Kim Buike and made several comments that struck viewers as strange. First, she suggested Kim needed someone “matronly.” She went to make fun of his game. She acted disgusted by his connection to Faith, and insisted that Faith only saw him as a friend when, clearly, the opposite was true. In their last face-off before Faith and Kim were voted out of the resort, she gave the Washington-based Kim a look that could have killed. So, what was the deal? Kathy revealed why she disliked Kim so much during a podcast appearance. The story feels a bit incomplete, though.

Kathy Swarts claims she had good reason to neg Kim Buike on camera. During a recent appearance on Bachelor Happy Hour, Kathy claims she approached Kim when they arrived in Costa Rica. She noted that they had never spoken before. Kathy claims she thought they might connect, considering her late husband was also in the Navy. She went on to say that she approached Kim, intrigued by his disinterest, and asked if she had done something to offend him. Kathy claims Kim looked her up and down with his “eyeballs” and said there was nothing about her he found attractive.

While Kim certainly seems eccentric, Reddit users find it hard to believe the retired naval officer would be so blunt. Several believe that Kim may have been clear that he had no romantic interest in her. Still, they doubt he was nearly as rude as Kathy claimed he was. Several fans noted that Kathy, herself, has been outwardly rude, dismissive, and hostile during the course of the series. She’s had some tense moments with both men and women on the show.  The alleged interaction did not happen on camera.

It is unclear if Faith and Kim will appear at the Bachelor in Paradise reunion. Some fans hope they will set the record straight, but only time will tell.
