In only the first 10 minutes of The Kardashians Season 6 premiere, Kris Jenner reveals her surprising connection to the Menendez brothers.

“Ryan Murphy told me that his new series, like how he did Dahmer, is now gonna be on the Menendez brothers,” Kim Kardashian tells her mom and sisters Kourtney Kardashian and Kendall Jenner after a photoshoot.

Keep in mind that this episode was filmed back in April 2024, which was months before Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story premiered on Netflix.

“Oh, my God. You know I knew those guys in the ‘80s,” Kris immediately tells her daughters. “I knew the kids because Erik used to come over and play tennis with your dad on the weekends.”

Lyle and Erik Menendez were charged with the 1989 murders of their parents, though their first trial ended in a hung jury. While the brothers claimed they shot their parents out of self-defense after facing years of emotional and sexual abuse from their father, most of their allegations were deemed inadmissible in their second trial and they were ultimately sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

“I remember my dad talking about the case and I remember the whole case growing up in Beverly Hills, that’s where we were,” Kim says, referring to her lawyer father Robert Kardashian Sr., who had infamously represented O.J. Simpson in his murder trial. “The trial, I think, happened when I was, like, 13 so there were big cases that I would love to talk to my dad about. And so this was one of them.”

“Now, being older and seeing it from a different lens, 35 years later, and knowing what I know now about the system, I just have a whole different outlook on it,” she added.

Kim, who has been an advocate for criminal justice reform, visited the Menendez brothers in prison shortly after Murphy’s series came out. In a personal essay shared with NBC in October 2024, Kim argued that Lyle and Erik should be given second chances and that their life sentences should be reconsidered.

“I don’t believe that spending their entire natural lives incarcerated was the right punishment for this complex case. Had this crime been committed and tried today, I believe the outcome would have been dramatically different,” she wrote.

A California judge will decide in March if the brothers should have their sentences reduced.

New episodes of The Kardashians air on Thursdays on Hulu.
