Cleric Lawrence has voiced his dissatisfaction with Nigeria’s current situation, challenging its long-held title as the “Giant of Africa.” During a recent sermon, he questioned whether this designation truly reflects the struggles faced by its people today.
In his address, the pastor commended former President Olusegun Obasanjo, highlighting him as one of Nigeria’s most effective leaders. He recalled the significant debt relief achieved under Obasanjo’s administration, marking it as a major success.
Pastor Lawrence also expressed concern over Nigeria’s escalating debt and the growing foreign influence over various economic sectors. He cautioned that these issues could further affect the nation’s sovereignty and economic stability.
Reflecting on the nation’s past, he lamented the perceived decline in Nigeria’s dignity and global influence, contrasting it with the more respected standing it held in previous decades.

Emphasising the need for accountability in leadership, the cleric stated that political support should not be based on family ties, ethnicity, religion, or personal relationships.
According to him, citizens should evaluate leaders based on their performance and the impact of their policies on the lives of ordinary Nigerians.

“I don’t want to hear anybody say Giant of Africa. It’s mockery. One of the best presidents that ever presided this country remains Obasanjo. I don’t care what you say about him. Go and read the record of the things that he did. It was in his term that all the debts vanished.
But in certain people’s terms, we don’t even know where the debt is going now. It has definitely moved beyond earth to space.
I was reading in the news recently that some people went to one query to get sand and the people selling the sand were Chinese people. In your own country. Sh@me. Giant of Africa.
If you know the dignity of Nigeria decades ago, but today it’s a different ball game.
Let me tell you, if my brother from the same father and mother, was the president of this nation and things are like this, if I vote for him, that punishment will not end. That’s the truth. I would rather disown my own family name than to vote for him….”
