The NFL is going international with the help of Peacock.

One of the first match-ups of the 2024-2025 season is set to take place in São Paulo on Sept. 6, and will stream exclusively on the streamer, per an announcement from the league on Tuesday (via Deadline).

The Philadelphia Eagles have already secured a slot to play in the league’s “first-ever regular season game in South America,” but the other team and the game’s start time will be revealed at a later time. Additionally, as specified by the announcement, the game will also serve as the first time in over 50 years that the league has held an opening weekend match-up on a Friday night.

With respect to the news, Rick Cordelia, President of NBC Sports, said that “it’s exciting for Peacock to exclusively showcase the NFL’s first-ever regular season game in Brazil as part of NBC Sports’ unprecedented presentation of three primetime games on the NFL’s opening weekend.”

“Peacock continues to deliver the best experience in sports streaming, as this game will follow this summer’s Paris Olympics and Paralympics, which will have every event live streamed on the service,” he added.

Peacock isn’t the only streaming service to score a deal with the NFL for next season. The league’s announcement also shared that Prime Video — who began streaming Thursday Night Football exclusively in 2022 — scored a Wild Card game. This allows the streamer to follow in the footsteps of Peacock after their exclusive January wild-card playoff game in which the Kansas City Chiefs and the Miami Dolphins faced off.

Jay Marine, Prime Video’s Global Head of Sports and Ads, said that they are “thrilled to bring the excitement of an NFL Wild Card playoff game to Prime Video for the first time.”

“Following our first two groundbreaking seasons of Thursday Night Football and our first-ever Black Friday Football game, we’re proud to expand our relationship with the league, and we’re looking forward to continuing to innovate for fans this season,” he continued.

The NFL’s Executive Vice President of Media Distribution, Hans Schroeder, praised “the viewership success” of Prime Video’s and Peacock’s “historic Wild Card game” as “strong indicators [their] streaming distribution is resonating with [their] fans.”

While last year’s Peacock exclusive “averaged approximately 23 million viewers,” becoming the “most-streamed live event in US history,” not all fans were thrilled about it. This inspired Chiefs defensive end Charles Omenihu to give away 90 three-month Peacock memberships in order to ensure that members of Chiefs Kingdom could tune into the game.

However, the NFL’s announcement highlights that both games will be “available on free, over-the-air broadcast television in the local markets of the competing team,” in addition to NFL+.
