The beloved Harry Potter series is set to see a change in its cast lineup, as Gracie Cochrane, who brought Ginny Weasley to life in the first season, will not be returning for the second season.
In a heartfelt joint statement released on Monday, May 18, Cochrane and her family disclosed the decision. “Due to unforeseen circumstances, Gracie has made the challenging decision to step away from her role as Ginny Weasley in the HBO Harry Potter series after season one,” they shared with various media outlets.
The statement further expressed Cochrane’s gratitude: “Her time as part of the Harry Potter world has been truly wonderful, and she is deeply grateful to Lucy Bevan and the entire production team for creating such an unforgettable experience. Gracie is very excited about the opportunities her future holds.”
Echoing this sentiment, an HBO spokesperson issued their own statement, saying, “We support Gracie Cochrane and her family’s decision not to return for the next season of HBO’s Harry Potter series, and we are grateful for her work on season one of the show. We wish Gracie and her family the best.”
This casting change comes amid the exciting development of a new Harry Potter TV series. Announced during the Warner Bros. Discovery presentation in April 2023, the network revealed plans for a reboot of J.K. Rowling’s enchanting novels for their streaming service, Max. This ambitious project is envisioned as a “decade-long series” featuring an entirely new cast, promising a fresh take on the magical stories beloved by fans worldwide.
Cochrane appeared as Ginny in season 1 of the series, which is set to premiere in December 2026 on HBO. The series is set to star Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley.
Additional characters include Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley, Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy, Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy, Leo Earley as Seamus Finnigan, Alessia Leoni as Parvati Patil, Sienna Moosah as Lavender Brown, Bel Powley as Petunia Dursley, Daniel Rigby as Vernon Dursley and Bertie Carvel as Cornelius Fudge.
