‘The Wonder Years’ Reboot Canceled By ABC After 2 Seasons

ABC is getting out of the nostalgia game for now, with the announcement that the network is canceling its reboot of The Wonder Years after two seasons.

The Wonder Years starred Elisha Williams as young Dean Williams (with Don Cheadle providing narration as the grown version of Dean), along with Dulé Hill, Saycon Sengbloh, Laura Kariuki, Amari O’Neil, Julian Lerner and Milan Ray. The period sitcom was set in the late 1960s and centered on Dean as he navigated the awkwardness of middle school on top of his family life, in Montgomery, Alabama. Based on the 1988 dramedy of the same name which ran until 1993, the reboot was similarly filled with nostalgia for a bygone era, but unlike that series, this one offered the perspective of a Black family during a time of social unrest.

Fred Savage, who starred as Kevin Arnold on the original version, served as an executive producer and director of the new series until May 2022, when he was fired after facing accusations of misconduct. Since Savage’s dismissal, the show has endured other complications, such as ABC’s decision to bump the show’s second season from late 2022 to June 2023. The cancellation is a disappointment to those who loved the series, but not necessarily a shock given that the network didn’t seem to prioritize it on their schedule.

Created by Saladin K. Patterson, the show first premiered in September 2021. The second season just recently came out on Disney+, where you can watch every episode.
