Jane Fonda may be experiencing the honor of a lifetime at this evening’s SAG Awards, but the legendary actor kicked off the night with a rather uncomfortable red carpet interview with Lilly Singh.
Fonda, who will become the 60th recipient of the SAG Life Achievement Award tonight, was the first celebrity Singh spoke to during the pre-show (which she cohosted alongside Sasheer Zamata). She started off her interview normally enough, with a bit of chatter about her custom Armani gown.
However, the chat took a turn when Singh asked the Grace and Frankie star about the advice she has for younger actors and what she does when she’s not working. At one point, Fonda even called out Singh for putting words in her mouth, telling her, “Those were your words, not mine.”
The tone was extremely off, to put it lightly, and everyone on X noticed too, where the tweets about the cringey exchange came flooding in.
“Omg this #JaneFonda interview is SO AWKWARD,” one wrote. Another added, “It’s #JaneFonda ok? That was an akward [sic] moment.”
Meanwhile, one X user suspected, “Jane Fonda did NOT want to talk,” while another criticized the “cringe” pre-show, writing, “The Jane Fonda interview was bizarre.”
One even wrote, “was anyone else EXTREMELY UNCOMFORTABLE when jane fonda was being interviewed by lilly singh on the sag red carpet just now? it was so awkward and difficult to watch, jane looked like she wanted to be anywhere else.”
But it wasn’t just Singh’s interview with Fonda that had X chattering away. Her discussion with Kieran Culkin raised plenty of eyebrows too. The two exchanged barbs about their ages, with Culkin often hitting back at Singh’s questions in a way that felt a bit charged.
After seeing his red carpet interview, one X user wrote, “Yikes what uncomfortable interviews on the @netflix red carpet. The questions are absolutely ridiculous. That was a mess, poor Kieran Culkin.”
Another added, “that kieran culkin interview with that lily was painfulllll omfg,” while one more called out Singh for asking how Culkin spent his Home Alone paycheck, which he received when he was seven years old.
They wrote of Singh’s “terrible” red carpet interviews, “Acting too much like a fan girl. Going way off topic. Asking ridiculous questions. Like Kieran Culkin is gonna remember what he spent his Home Alone paycheck on.”
