What films come to mind when you hear the phrase “Best Fourth of July movies”?
Steven Spielberg’s 1975 classic Jaws, which is now streaming on Peacock, is a great answer. You can’t go wrong with The Sandlot (Disney+), I Know What You Did Last Summer, or even the Broadway musical Hamilton. But it’s really a two-movie race between Jaws and, you guessed it, Independence Day.
The classic 1996 action film starring Will Smith, Bill Pullman, and Jeff Goldblum memorably centers on mankind’s attempt to thwart a catastrophic alien invasion. It’s an all-timer, and Pullman’s iconic speech still gives me goosebumps.
“Perhaps it’s fate that today is the Fourth of July, and you will once again be fighting for our freedom… Not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution… but from annihilation. We are fighting for our right to live. To exist. And should we win the day, the Fourth of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day the world declared in one voice: “We will not go quietly into the night!” We will not vanish without a fight! We’re going to live on! We’re going to survive! Today we celebrate our Independence Day!”
