A woman has recounted how her aunt suffered a loss of ₦1 million after rekindling a friendship with a former classmate at a school reunion. This incident occurred despite her aunt receiving a prior caution against lending money to anyone she met at the event.
It was the aunt’s first time attending the reunion after many years away. The gathering brought a flood of excitement and nostalgia, as her old classmates warmly welcomed her back into the fold.
During this emotional reunion, a close friend discreetly advised her aunt to be wary. This friend specifically warned against lending money to anyone at the event, noting that some attendees were known for borrowing without returning what they owed.
Despite the warning, the aunt continued to keep in touch with one of the women she reconnected with at the reunion, maintaining regular conversations by phone.
About a month later, this woman requested a loan of ₦2 million, claiming it was needed to restock her shop. She pledged to repay the amount within a week, contingent on securing another financial loan. The aunt eventually decided to transfer ₦1 million, hoping for the best.
Friend disappeared after collecting the money
Recounting the incident, the lady said, “A very old friend approached her and told her that in case any of them asked her of money, she shouldn’t give them that it is a common habit amongst them and that they won’t pay back.”
She further stated, “My aunt borrowed her 1m. All of a sudden, the woman stopped calling and stopped answering my aunt’s calls. Weeks went by, and she did not refund the money… It was then my aunt’s realised a 58-year-old woman duped her.”
Discovery raises more questions
The narrator said her aunt later contacted another male classmate to seek advice. According to him, he had experienced a similar situation with the same woman after lending her money on two occasions, with communication ending after the second loan.
