A young Nigerian woman has stirred social media reactions after disclosing that her father declined to provide her with ₦5,000 needed for her IT defense at school, citing that he was awaiting funds the following week.
In a widely circulated video posted by @The Benin Blogger on X (previously known as Twitter), she recounted how she reached out to her father for a small financial assistance, only to be told to pray for him so that the money others owed him would be paid.
Initially, his response seemed reasonable, but her perspective shifted when she later discovered in the family group chat that he was making contributions of ₦50,000 to Saint Mary Catholic Church and ₦60,000 to Winners Chapel.
Expressing her frustration, she remarked:
“When you start to feel resentment towards your parents, people often remind you, ‘he’s still your dad, you should be grateful.'”
The young lady highlighted the unfairness of seeing her father spend money she couldn’t access while she struggled, sparking heated debates online about parental priorities and fairness.
One commentator wrote, “Naija parents will do church and big family events but ignore small family needs. I feel her.” Another added, “It’s not about money alone, it’s about respect and care. Children notice these things.”
Her story has gone viral, prompting discussions about parenting, financial priorities, and the fine line between respect and emotional neglect.
Many young Nigerians can relate to the struggle of being overlooked at home while money flows elsewhere.
