Wonka has sweet success at #1 with $39 million in ticket sales

Timothée Chalamet is enjoying the sweet taste success, debuting at in number one at the box office.

Wonka, which tells the back story of eccentric candy maker Willy Wonka, the character first introduced in Roald Dahl’s book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, handily took the top spot after its Friday opening in theaters. 

The musical fantasy, which co-stars Oscar winner Olivia Coleman, Keegan-Michael Key and Hugh Grant earned its own golden ticket, collecting $39 million in ticket sales domestically and another $112.4 million internationally for an opening weekend total of $151.4 million.

The opening grosses more than cover the film’s $125 million budget. 

In second place was another prequel, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.

The action adventure starring Rachel Ziegler as a tribute and Tom Blyth as Coriolanus Snow who will become President Snow in the post-apocalyptic world created by author Suzanne Collins, has been in theaters for fives weeks earned a respectable $5.8 million.

The movie has been popular with audiences in spite of lackluster critics reviews and has earned a total of more than $145 million domestically and nearly $300 million worldwide. 

The Boy and the Heron, an animated tale by acclaimed filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, fell to third place after opening at number one last week, pulling $5.17 million dollars.  

The semi-autobiographical tale focuses on a young boy named Mahito, who while missing his mother, ventures into a world shared by the living and the dead. 

Christian Bale, Luca Padovan, Gemma Chan, Dave Bautista, Willem Dafoe, Karen Fukuhara, Robert Pattinson and Florence Pugh, lend their voices to the film which has received high praise from critics and audiences alike. 

Godzilla Minus One continues to wreak havoc.  This weekend the sci-fi drama set in post WWII Japan landed in fourth place and $4.88 million.

Critics and audiences have given enthusiastic reviews for this new take on the monster by focusing on the lives of the characters as well as the action scenes. 

The movie received a Critics Choice Awards nomination on Wednesday for Best Foreign Language Film, which could bode well for the production when the Oscar nominations are announced January 23.

The Shift, remains in 10th place for the third week in a row. The Christian-themed film starring Neal McDonough, Sean Astin and Kristoffer Polaha in a story inspired by the biblical book of Job, was distributed by Angel Studios.

Instead of broadly advertising their projects, the company does outreach with religious organizations, offering group ticket sales on its website and the opportunity for those who have seen the movie to ‘pay it forward’ and buy tickets as a gift for friends. 

The Shift earned slightly more than $1 million over the weekend, bringing its three week tally to more than $10.6 million.
