Who Is Yalda Hakim

Australian broadcast journalist, news presenter, and documentary maker Yalda Hakim was born on June 26, 1983, in Kabul, Afghanistan. She was raised in the western Sydney district of Parramatta after her family fled Afghanistan and immigrated to Australia in 1986. She later pursued a journalism degree. Her career began at SBS Television, and in 2012, she transferred to BBC TV. Hakim frequently provides commentary for BBC World News.

Her reporting and writing for Afghanistan: Documenting A Crucial Year earned her a Peabody Award nomination in 2021.

In February 2023, it was announced Hakim would become a chief presenter on the BBC’s new news channel for both UK and international viewers due to launch in April.

Education

Hakim went to Macarthur Girls High School in Parramatta, Sydney, where she excelled in sports, played the violin, and was a prefect. She went to Parramatta West Public School as well.

From 2002 to 2004, Hakim attended Macquarie University to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Media while serving as a board member of the Macquarie University Union.

At Macleay College in Sydney, Hakim earned a diploma in journalism in 2005. She continued on to complete a distance education Bachelor of Arts in Journalism at Monash University from 2007 to 2009 while also serving as a cadet at the Special Broadcasting Service.

Besides English, Hakim is fluent in Persian, Dari, Hindi, Urdu, and Pashto, and as of 2022 was learning Mandarin.
