CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — April is known as National Child Abuse Prevention Month. As part of that observance, organizations like Crisis Nursery and others formed a day to spread awareness.
Workers and the community showed support on Friday by wearing blue and planting pinwheels for children who may have dealt with child abuse. According to DCFS one in five children in Illinois will be victims of abuse by the age of 18.
Jill Duden, a specialist with Prevent Child Abuse Illinois, said this is common in all communities.
“We really want you to reach out to your legislator and let your voices be heard on behalf of children because, oftentimes, they’re voiceless and we need to be their voice and speak up on behalf of them,” Duden said.
DCFS also said 125,000 children are abused or neglected each year in Illinois.
