Augusta Elections Board Expands Early Voting Locations, Approves Closure of Three Precincts

AUGUSTA, Ga. – As early voting kicks off for the House District 130 special election, some voters are voicing concerns over the accessibility of the current polling location at the Municipal Building. Residents are eager for more convenient options.

In response to these accessibility issues, the Elections Board has decided to introduce a second early voting site. The Brigham Center will now serve as an additional polling location, a decision influenced by ongoing roadwork in Downtown Augusta, which has made travel to the Municipal Building challenging for many.

“We need to be able to accommodate individuals who can’t make it downtown. The city center isn’t the only area where we have voters participating in this special election,” explained Octavia Collins, emphasizing the need for more accessible voting options.

Lynn Bailey, Chair of the Elections Board, also highlighted the geographical size of District 130. “District 130 spans a vast area, extending all the way down to the Burke County line. Considering its size and current road conditions, we believed it was prudent to open a location in South Augusta to better serve our voters,” she noted.

But opening Brigham starting on Saturday adds $12,000-$15,000 to the cost of the election and it’s not budgeted.

“When it’s all said and done, we’re going to have to go before the commission and ask for money to basically pay for what we already spent,” said Elections Director Travis Doss.

The Election Board is hoping commissioners understand the additional expense.

“Right now, there’s a little bit of upheaval down here. I hope they, like the Board of Elections, will not get heartburn from this expenditure,” said Bailey.

And the board is hoping voters do not get heartburn over changes to their precincts.

Voters who have been casting ballots at St Mark’s Church will now vote at National Hills Baptist.

Oasis Church voters will switch to Brothersville Events Center.

And Mann-Mize Methodist will no longer be used, so voters in Precinct 110 will to go Good Shepherd Baptist. Precinct 208 voters will go to Building Worship Center.

Elections officials said voters affected will be notified by mail signs posted in the neighborhoods and the old precincts.
