City of Augusta activates warming shelters as ice storm hits

AUGUSTA, GA – In response to the impending severe winter weather, the City of Augusta has announced the opening of warming shelters for residents on Saturday, January 24, and Sunday, January 25. This initiative, led by Kymber Keaton, the Director of the Emergency Management Agency (EMA), aims to provide a safe haven for all community members during this period of extreme cold.

The National Weather Service has issued an Ice Storm Warning for Augusta, predicting a bout of freezing rain that is forecasted to begin on Saturday evening and continue through Sunday. Residents should brace for ice accumulations ranging from 0.15 to 0.24 inches. Fortunately, the risk of refreezing is expected to remain low on Sunday night.

Reporting Road Hazards: Community members are encouraged to report any road hazards to Augusta311. This can be done using various methods to ensure roads are safe for travel during the harsh weather conditions.

The expected ice accumulation is between 0.15” – 0.24”. Refreeze potential remains low Sunday night.

Power Outages and Restoration Times:
Individuals can utilize the following sites to get real time outage maps and estimated restoration
times

Shelter Access Requirements: Individuals seeking overnight shelter must obtain a shelter clearance.

Beginning at 5:00 PM, a deputy will be on-site at May Park to assist individuals and provide the
necessary documentation.

Transportation to Overnight Warming Shelters
Augusta Transit will provide complimentary transportation to designated overnight warming
shelters between 3:00 PM and 8:00 PM on Saturday, and then between 5:00 PM and 8:00 PM on Sunday.

To arrange transportation, please call 706-821-1719 before 8:00 PM.

    May Park will also serve as a Daytime warming center on Saturday, January 24, and Sunday,

January 25, between 12:00 PM and 5:00 PM. Residents may use Augusta Transit’s normal
routes during standard operating hours.
