BRISTOL, Va. (WJHL) — A Bristol, Virginia, woman was charged in connection with an ongoing child abuse investigation on Thursday.

Jameeka Starks, 33, was charged with abuse and neglect of a child and strangulation. A release from the Bristol, Virginia, Police Department said the investigation involved Starks’ 13-year-old child.

Starks was transported to the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail Authority and is being held without bond, the release said.

“The charges brought in this case highlight the critical need for specialized training and resources. The creation of our Special Victims Detective position ensures we have investigators, like Detective Cappetta, who are solely focused on safeguarding children and supporting victims of trauma. Our community should know that these crimes will be treated with the seriousness and expertise they require,” Chief D. Byron Ashbrook said in the release.
