TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Busch Gardens Tampa Bay has welcomed a baby orangutan to their family.

The critically endangered Bornean Orangutan was born on Saturday via c-section and weighed only 3.4 pounds. She was delivered by a team of medical and zoological professionals, according to Busch Gardens.

The park said the baby’s mother, “Luna,” is recovering from surgery and is receiving 24-hour care. Once she’s stabilized, Luna and her baby will be reunited.

The newborn’s birth marks a milestone in Orangutan conservation efforts among facilities that participate in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Special Survival Plan (SSP).

Bornean Orangutans can be found exclusively on the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia. They are the third largest ape species and the largest tree-dwelling ape species.

Guests can follow along with updates on Luna and her new baby, by checking Busch Gardens Tampa Bay’s Facebook or Instagram pages.
