SAVANNAH, Ga. — Alumni of Calvary Day, Thomas Blackshear and Walter “Buddy” Mathis, recently returned to their hometown to take part in the second annual scholarship event hosted by the International Longshoremen’s Association Local 1414.
Thomas Blackshear, a promising wide receiver, is gearing up for his second year at the University of Georgia. During his freshman year, he played in three games for the Bulldogs, securing two receptions that totaled 23 yards.
Back in his senior year at Calvary Day, Blackshear showcased his talent by catching 27 passes, accumulating 551 yards, and scoring five touchdowns. He also made his mark on defense with two interceptions.
Reflecting on his journey, Blackshear credited his high school mentors for his readiness to face new challenges on the collegiate field.
“My coaches set high expectations for me,” Blackshear shared. “Those expectations were instrumental in preparing me for the challenges I face now.”
Defensive lineman Buddy Mathis transferred to Auburn after he played his freshman season at LSU. Mathis appeared in 12 games for the Tigers and recorded nine total tackles and a pass breakup.
At Calvary Day, he recorded 189 tackles, 57 tackles for loss, and two forced fumbles over his time there.
He said he learned a lot in year one and expects a huge leap with Auburn in year two.
“I’ve been working, crafting, and making myself better in the offense,” said Mathis. “I just want to put on for the people and let everyone know who I am.”
