CARTER COUNTY, Tenn – (WJHL) – The Carter County Recovery Group hosted a prayer vigil this morning at Hampton Elementary School to remember when Hurricane Helene struck the region one year ago.

The vigil, which included a candlelit ceremony, drew over 100 people.

The event included a time of remembrance, with thanks to volunteers, churches, and agencies that provided relief and brought the community together through scriptures, worship music, and testimonies.

In attendance were four pastors delivering special sermons for the disaster victims: “Testimonies of Resilience,” “God’s Provision,” “Strength for the Weary,” and “Hope for the Future.”

“May he replace anxiety and depression with peace of Christ that surpasses all understanding; and would you guard our hearts and minds in Christ for your own glory—and it’s in the name of Jesus we pray, amen,” said Carter County Pastor Jason Payne.

One couple in particular, Carley and Geren Street, reflected on the positivity they’ve gained in life after having their home flooded.

“Certainly a time of hardship; it’s also showed us that we have so much to be thankful for and showed us that we have a community where God is working and moving,” Geren said.

His wife, Carley, said they continue to rebuild a year later and choose to remain positive.

“We look back and remember where we were—we look and see where we are now and it was a great time to be here and to have prayer over each thing that has went on and pray for our future,” Carley said.
