CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — The City of Champaign announced their spring yard waste collection dates.
Yard waste includes leaves, grass clippings, and plant materials. Bags with other materials like rocks, glass, potted plants, mulch, or pet waste will not be picked up. City officials said yard waste collection is available to all residential properties within the Champaign city limits.
Collection dates depend on whether you reside in the Blue or the Orange Zone. To find your zone, visit Champaign’s Yard Waste Collection Map site and enter your address.
Both zones will have one April date and one May date by which yard waste must be set out by 6 a.m.:
- Blue Zone residents:
- Monday, April 8
- Monday, May 13
- Orange Zone residents:
- Monday, April 15
- Monday, May 20
On these dates, crews will begin working through the given zone until all materials are picked up. If yard waste has not been collected by the Friday after the scheduled collection, call the Public Works Department at 217-403-4700.
Champaign officials provided the following requirements for yard waste collection:
- Materials must be in 30-gallon paper yard waste bags. No plastic bags or containers.
- Bags should be placed within 10 feet of the curbside and five feet away from obstacles like mailboxes, trees, telephone poles, and fire hydrants.
- Twigs and branches may be bundled with non-metallic twine or placed in paper yard waste bags.
- Branches cannot be larger than 2 inches in diameter and 3½ feet long. Bundles cannot be larger than 18 inches in diameter.
For residents outside of Champaign, or for yard waste that doesn’t fit the above requirements, the materials can be taken to the Landscape Recycling Center at 1210 East University Avenue in Urbana for a fee.
