CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — Authorities in Champaign County are actively addressing a series of rumors circulating about potential operations by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the area next week.
In response to these speculations, Urbana Mayor Deshawn Williams issued a statement on social media on Saturday afternoon.
Additionally, the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District took to social media on Saturday morning to express their support for the immigrant community. They emphasized that all individuals, irrespective of their immigration status, have rights, such as the right to remain silent and to consult with an attorney.
Alongside their message, they shared a graphic underscoring these rights.
They also directed residents to a website containing important information about their rights during encounters with ICE.
The City of Urbana remains committed to protecting all members of our community and ensuring that everyone feels safe, respected, and informed.

The Champaign-Urbana Public Health District also shared a post on social media Saturday morning, saying “CUPHD stands in solidarity with our immigrant community. Everyone, regardless of immigration status, has rights, including the right to remain silent and speak to a lawyer.”
They also shared a graphic that reads:
In recent days, several immigrant serving organizations and advocates in Champaign-Urbana have received messages from multiple reliable sources informing us of significant ICE presence arriving in Champaign-Urbana. We do not have confirmation of the exact date, but the messages indicate ICE activity will begin on Monday.
We are taking this threat seriously and are doing what we can to prepare.
We encourage community members to take precautions and review your emergency plans with your family.
