CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. — In a significant development on Wednesday evening, the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office successfully apprehended the area’s “most wanted fugitive,” as shared via a live update on social media.
Authorities identified the suspect as Meshawn Shamar Richardson, who had been on the run due to a series of burglary charges. His activities also drew the attention of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), which sought him for related federal offenses. In addition to federal interest, local law enforcement had issued felony warrants for his arrest.
Chatham County Sheriff Richard Coleman noted that Richardson had previously managed to slip through the grasp of authorities back in April. During a Facebook live session on Wednesday, an official from the sheriff’s office displayed Richardson seated in the back of a law enforcement vehicle.
His capture was facilitated by the collaborative efforts of the U.S. Marshals Service, as revealed in the online video.
The pursuit of Richardson became a focal point for the community after Sheriff Coleman made a social media appearance, showcasing a disguise reportedly used by Richardson to avoid capture. The outfit featured a wig, sunglasses, and a hat, drawing considerable public interest.
During Wednesday’s live, someone off camera asked if he had been captured with his wig on, to which another person responded that he hadn’t been.
“Man, y’all known I ain’t wearing no wig,” Richardson said. “Why are y’all doing me like that?”
Richardson smiled and spoke to officials before being taken into the jail to be processed. He told the sheriff it was nice meeting him and said that Coleman could do his dance tomorrow while laughing.
The sheriff took on a serious tone at the end of the live, reminding residents that he is working hard to keep them safe.
“It’s a different day in Chatham County today,” Coleman said. “Crime cannot have a residency in this county, we will not tolerate it. Chatham County will be safe…Crime, I’m your worst nightmare. I am a sheriff that gives a d***. I care.”
