JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — Johnson City should look a little more litter-free after nearly 150 volunteers braved Saturday morning’s rainy weather to take part in the 2nd annual Johnson City Beautification Day.
Nathan Farnor, coordinator for Civic and Leadership Engagement at ETSU, told News Channel 11 that the volunteers who participated came from several different community organizations.
“We have lots of community engagement things on campus, different organizations and businesses in the region trying to do the same thing,” he said. “Not a lot of opportunities for everyone to come under the same roof or pavilion, if you will, and tackle it together and take ownership for the community, and this is the chance to do that.”
Volunteers were split into about 15 small groups and tackled the trash in several parts of the city including downtown, Founders Park and the Tweetsie Trail. Cigarette butts, cans, bottles and even some half-eaten lunches were picked up by the volunteers.
Organizations and businesses that helped keep the event going include ETSU Leadership, Civics & Engagement, Volunteer ETSU, Young Professionals of Johnson City, Appalachian Maids, Washington County Sheriff`s Office, Food City, Chick-fil-A, the City of Johnson City and Visit Johnson City.
