CLINTON, Ill. (WCIA) — Michael Reidy, the former Chief of the Clinton Police Department, has passed away.

The department announced the retired chief’s death on Tuesday, describing the passing as “untimely.” Originally from Bloomington, Reidy served in law enforcement for 37 years, starting in Chenoa in 1976.

Reidy’s career took him as far away as Maine when he became a Police Chief there in 1983. Ten years later, he returned home to Illinois to became Clinton’s Police Chief, a position he held for 20 years. He retired in 2013.

Reidy was also once the president of the Maine Police Chiefs Association and he was a lifetime member of the Central Illinois Association of Law Enforcement Executives, the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police and the International Association of Chiefs of Police.

“Chief Reidy’s commitment to serving the public was not only evident in his professional accomplishments, but his passion and generosity through the various organizations, boards and volunteer work he devoted to the Clinton community and beyond,” the Clinton Police Department said. “Chief Reidy’s legacy lives on in the Clinton Police Department through the countless lives that he impacted and the numerous programs that are still carried on today in his honor, and now memory. Chief Reidy was a great leader and an incredible mentor, both professionally and personally, but most of all he was an amazing friend to so many of us and he will be missed beyond words.”
