CLINTWOOD, Va. (WJHL) — Authorities in Clintwood have initiated an investigation into alleged child abuse following the viral spread of a concerning video online.

On Tuesday, the Clintwood Police Department shared via social media that they were aware of the footage and had subsequently detained an individual in connection with the incident.

According to documents obtained by News Channel 11, the suspect has been identified as 24-year-old David Umberger. The criminal complaint details that Umberger allegedly “tripped a minor, causing the child to fall” last Sunday.

Following the allegations, Umberger was taken into custody on Tuesday, as indicated in the arrest warrant.

Later that evening, he was released upon posting a $5,000 bond.

Dickenson County Commonwealth’s Attorney Joshua Newberry is investigating the case and said Umberger is facing assault and battery charges.

“The Town of Clintwood Police Department charged David Umberger with assault and battery in this case,” Newberry told News Channel 11. “The matter is still under investigation by both the Town of Clintwood Police Department and the Dickenson County Department of Social Services.”

While Umberger was released on bail, Newberry filed a motion to revoke the bond as “his continued freedom poses a danger to his family, his household, and the public at large,” according to the motion statement.

A court date is set for Nov. 12.
