Danville Resident Commits to Marathon Challenge in Support of...

DANVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — For one father in Central Illinois, breaking through personal barriers and crossing finish lines seemed like a distant dream.

Years ago, Loren Green made a life-changing decision for the sake of his family. He completely overhauled his lifestyle, and today, he is preparing to participate in the Christie Clinic Illinois Full Marathon.

Discover how a Champaign County native is rediscovering herself through the power of running.

“I used to be a runner in high school, but I drifted away from it,” Loren shared.

Running has a way of welcoming you back, no matter how long you’ve been away. Loren’s journey is a testament to this enduring connection with the sport.

Loren lives in Danville and is a wind turbine technician. He found himself running again, not just for himself, but because his family needed him to as well.

“Around the time that we got married and found out that we were pregnant with my son, and I had lost my dad when I was 24 to heart attack, so knowing that I was going to have a kid, I wanted to be able to keep up with them and stay healthy,” Loren said.

Within a year, Loren lost almost 100 pounds.

“I kept going with that and was able to actually use the fitness and stuff to move from the job that I had to being able to be more confident and get into something a lot more active, like the climbing wind turbines and such,” Loren said.

Making a lifestyle switch was met by overwhelming support from his wife, Layni Green.

“It has been great honestly,” she said. “A lot of work, but watching him be determined to do it has been inspiring.”

Layni isn’t the only one watching. Their four-year-old son is too. Together, Loren and his son recently ran a 5K.

“Me and [our daughter] have just watched them do their most recent 5K, and I’m kind of hoping that’s going to be our future, is watching and cheering,” Layni shared.

They’ll get to watch again on April 25, when Loren competes in the full marathon. He said that he’s teaching himself, and his family, a valuable life lesson.

“Determination can make a big difference,” he said.

Loren already has his sights set beyond the finish line.

“I’ve done that, so now what else can I do, and what else can I show my kids to do?” Loren said.
