Decatur Welcomes New Horse Therapy Facility: A Fresh Start for Equine-Assisted Healing

DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — A local nonprofit in Decatur known for offering equine-assisted therapy is set to open its doors at a brand-new facility this week.

Jen Lang, who serves as the Board President for Freedom Reins, shared that the organization is relocating after five years in the community to a site that is more centrally located.

“The move is all about improving accessibility,” Lang explained. “We’ll be easier to find, offer more flexible hours, and have greater availability to those who need us.”

To mark the occasion, the Decatur Regional Chamber of Commerce will be holding a ribbon-cutting event on Friday at 4:30 p.m. The celebration will take place at the new facility located at 4505 Needle Rd., Decatur. Due to limited parking, visitors are requested to park at Life Foursquare Church, situated at 2954 Ash St. A shuttle service will run between the church and the barn every five to ten minutes.

The event will also include a meet and greet with the therapy horses, free lesson giveaways and more.

Freedom Reins aims to help individuals of all abilities through horses. They specialize in “Equine Assisted Activities and Therapies,” which Lang said has both physical and emotional benefits.

“The goal is to enrich the lives of people. As long as you leave a little better than you came, we consider it a success,” Lang said “Horses can be therapeutic for everyone, come find some joy!”

Freedom Reins sees individuals with cerebral palsy, autism, ADHD, depression, anxiety, sensory processing disorder and downs syndrome. But, Lang added that anyone and everyone is welcome.
