SANGAMON COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — Central Illinois was battered by severe storms from Wednesday night into Thursday, leaving a trail of damage in several communities throughout Sangamon County. On Thursday, both residents and emergency crews were busy evaluating the aftermath.

In Springfield, the Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport suffered significant damage. Several hangars were compromised, with roofs and walls bearing the brunt of the storm’s force, and small aircraft were also affected.

Furthermore, the city’s Animal Protection League faced substantial losses as the storm tore roofs off its buildings. Fortunately, all animals were unharmed.

Mechanicsburg was not spared either. The storm wreaked havoc along Main Street, where downed trees and scattered debris damaged various structures, including the village’s post office.

Power lines were also knocked down in the area as crews worked to clear roadways and restore service.

Mechanicsburg Volunteer Fire Chief Jason Jarrett said residents should keep their head on a swivel during the aftermath, as dangerous hazards will remain until cleanup is finished.

“You can’t really see cause you’re in a hurry and you’re hot, you’re tired and all the stuff that goes along with that,” Jarrett said.

Jarrett also reflected on the broader strain the community is facing as residents deal with ongoing recovery and rising costs.

Looking across the village of roughly 700 people, Jarrett described the scene as “heartbreaking.” The fire chief said events like these are devastating with people already struggling.

“Things aren’t getting cheaper in life,” Jarrett said. “Gas prices are where they are, grocery prices are going up … it hurts to watch the neighbors and the community have to struggle right now.”

Jarrett said clean up could be finished by next week, with a possibility of restoration efforts being quicker, depending on homeowner involvement.

In Riverton, damage at an Ameren substation led to widespread power outages in the community. Village Mayor Joseph Bartley said crews were actively on the scene restoring power in a phone call with WCIA. While power was mostly restored around 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, another round of storms in the evening knocked out power for a large part of Sangamon County again.

At Camp Butler, officials reported downed trees and damage to several headstones following the storm.

Further south in Dawson, officials said damage was limited to a few fallen trees, but power outages still impacted residents throughout the day.

With temperatures rising and no access to air conditioning, the volunteer fire department opened its doors as a cooling station for residents seeking relief from the heat.

Fire officials said they were most worried about the village’s elders in the scorching temperatures. Dawson Volunteer Fire Chief Josh Nibbe said the department quickly stepped in to offer support.

“It’s all hands on deck. You know, everybody’s willing to come up and try and help out where they can,” Nibbe said.

For Springfield residents looking for cooling areas, the city has nine designated areas to escape the sun.
