NEW YORK – The acclaimed Broadway sensation “The Book of Mormon” will be pausing its performances until May 17, as the theater undergoes essential repairs following a fire incident that forced the show’s closure.
All performances are suspended until Sunday, May 17. Those holding tickets for the affected dates will be contacted through their original purchase method to arrange refunds or alternative bookings.
In a joint statement released on Wednesday, ATG Entertainment and “The Book of Mormon” announced their collaboration with a team of industry experts to initiate necessary repairs on the venue. They expressed their profound gratitude towards the firefighters and emergency personnel for their courageous and swift actions.
The fire, which ignited on May 4 in an electrical room, inflicted “considerable damage” to the Eugene O’Neill Theatre, as reported by David Simms, Assistant Chief of the New York Fire Department. The fire’s origin remains under investigation. The statement noted that the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) was alerted promptly, arrived within minutes, and efficiently subdued the flames.
Simms explained that the damage was primarily localized to the fourth floor and a rear area housing lighting equipment and suspended chandeliers. Additionally, there was some water damage reported.
“The Book of Mormon” is among Broadway’s longest running shows, with more than 5,000 performances since opening at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre in 2011.
The theater, which opened in 1925, has previously hosted productions of “Sweeney Todd,” a revival of Tennessee Williams’ “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” and the rock musical “Spring Awakening,” among many other performances.
