EVANS, Ga. ()- This event has been going on for years since the 2000’s and it’s held every year on Armed Forces Day.

Armed Forces Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in May every year.

The free event is the CSRA’s way of giving back to our military.

There will be live music, food, fireworks, and a heartfelt salute to service members.

The event organizer tells me how Thunder over Evans began.

“There was a number of years ago in the early 2000s, my dad was in the airport and he witnessed the disrespect of a soldier. And so when he came back home to Augusta, he said, I’m going to put forth my effort, get a couple of friends together and create a event that draws the city together and celebrates those who serve,” said Shane Thompson.

He also said something new will be added to the firework show.

“Now we’ve got a laser team that’s coming in and they’re kind of like this new third arm that’s going to fully incorporate in the show. So they get the time code. They see all the things that are happening and they incorporate all these different colors of lasers into the show. So we’re excited about that. We haven’t seen it before, so it’ll be new to us and new to everybody who attends.”

Gates open Saturday at 5:30 at Evans Towne center Park.

The fireworks start at 9:15. No pets are allowed.
