DANVILLE, Ill. — The prospect of having a new hockey team in Danville is gaining momentum, offering a fresh chapter for local sports enthusiasts.

“If we can gather all the passionate individuals in one place, it will undoubtedly be a boon for Danville,” expressed Bo Cheesman, the owner and head coach of the Danville Iron hockey team.

Cheesman sees the David S. Palmer Arena as the ideal venue for this venture. The team is vying to join the United States Premier Hockey League, a notable junior league for male players.

The league’s season stretches from mid-September through March, promising months of thrilling hockey action.

“We want this to be an inclusive community where, though are trying to win on the ice, we want these visitors to come in and see the city. See what Danville has to provide,” said Cheesman.

Even the name of the team is indicative of the city’s history, referring to the work people did when there was a GM plant.

Currently, they are recruiting worldwide. Cheesman hopes to find 25 players from the ages of 16 to 20, and said the team will prepare them for collegiate hockey.

“Our best player is a selfless player who wants to work hard and put the front of the jersey ahead of the back of the jersey,” Cheesman said.

He said the athletes will be expected to help grow the game of hockey in the Danville area.

“Handle the load on the ice but off the ice, our players are going to be expected to be a part of the community,” Cheesman says.

And he said the players aren’t the only ones they expect this from.

“We want to be a part of this community. We want to ride with this community,” he said.

Danville Mayor Rickey Williams Jr. said he is thrilled to have the USPHL returning to Danville.

“When I was in high school many moons ago, we had a team called the Danville Wings, and we’re excited to bring this level of hockey back to the Arena,” Williams said. “We look forward to working with Mr. Cheesman and the Danville Iron staff and players to make them an integral part of this community for years to come.”
