GREENEVILLE, Tenn. (WJHL) – Greene County leaders held the 5th annual Day of Hope in Greene County. It’s a day meant to show that there is hope in dark times.
“The Day of Hope is designed through the recognition of organizations like these and faith-based organizations and other initiatives that we’ve got out there is to reaffirm and reestablish that,” said Greene County Mayor Kevin Morrison. “That it may not be necessarily as dark as what some people think.”
Day of Hope looks to target homelessness, addiction, and mental health. These are three points of concern in the county.
Speeches were given by several sponsors, all emphasizing their support for those experiencing hard times.
“There are people that care,” Morrison said. “There are people that love you, there are people that think you have value and purpose.”
The Day of Hope was celebrated at the C.A.R.E center in Greeneville. Morrison said this facility has made a significant impact on the community.
“It’s a great and positive addition,” said Morrison.
Rhonda Castro, co-founder of the center, said the day’s event helped reaffirm the importance of her work.
“It’s just a beautiful day to know that our leaders, with them and the Lord, that we can change things,” Castro said.
Angela Ricker found help through the C.A.R.E center and shared her story.
“I’ve been clean and sober ever since,” Ricker said. “I’m going on four months. Without the C.A.R.E center, I would probably be dead by now.”
Ricker said she feels supported by everyone involved.
“It makes me feel happy because finally, people has taken notice,” Ricker said. “And finally something being done.”
